High School Program
High Schools that are interested in a semester or yearlong project that involves a custom designed program with hands-on experience should contact Barbara Attwell at education@jacobswellspring.org. There are 2 areas of focus: The endangered species at the spring, and habitat restoration. Both of these will involve areas of study, partnering with research and community advocates, hands-on work, and possibly fundraising for the project.
Program 3: Grades 9 - 12
- Endangered Species
The spring possibly has an endangered arthropod – and endangered aquatic species are a relatively new field of research. The students will learn about the complexities of identifying and managing endangered species – such as the laws, funding, and rates around the world. We are currently working with an internationally known firm that identifies species, and have a diver research team that the students will enjoy working with.
- Habitat Restoration
The Jacob’s Well Natural Area is at the beginning of a huge undertaking – that of turning lands that were damaged as the result of overgrazing and being a mobile home park to a truly wild area of grasslands and wildlife habitat. Students would be involved in surveying plants and soils, insects, birds and wildlife. Studying the value of prescribed burns, planting, and building bat houses are all among the possibilities.
